Hells Half Acre

The following is Marjorie Kite’s introduction to her reading done in the early 1960’ s.
“(Also known as Helms or Dowell cemetery).

Located north of State Rd 205 on Wolfe Rd. to the Panhandle tracks,
west 40 rods on tracks then 20 rods north in a field. A knoll with 3 large trees.
Between 4 1/2 to 5 miles south west of Columbia City or 6 miles northeast of South Whitley.”
Kaler-Maring in their 1907 History of Whitley Co give an extensive run down as to origins and
events that occurred in the area known as Hell’s Half Acre. pages 193-197

Dowell Army D — died aged 1 year 3 months child of J & C — Hell's Half Acre
Dowell Desta M — died March 20 1864 aged 1 year 1 month child of J & C — Hell's Half Acre
Dowell Harrison — died February 7 1879 aged 79 years 8 months 5 days — Hell's Half Acre

Dowell Mary — died November 16 1888 aged 86 years 9 months 26 days wife of Harrison — Hell's Half Acre
Dowell William F — died February 15 1886 aged 2 years 6 months child of J & C — Hell's Half Acre
Dowell William W — died August 9 1889 aged 64 years 10 months 3 days — Hell's Half Acre

This cemetery is in the middle of a field on private property. I was given permission in 2004 to take these photographs. The houses were new construction back then and the girl living there didn't believe me when I said there was a graveyard in the trees. I am sure by now they are getting tired of people trying to get pictures of the graves and/or stealing parts of the stones.
